Back to my day job. We went to Julianne Batt's birthday party last night at Centrepoint in London. It was wonderful. She had 60 of her friends and family there. Mike did a parody all about his beautiful wife and his group consisted of his daughter Hayley on bass, Luke on guitar and my boy David on drums. Hayley also did a beautiful song she wrote for her mum. Later on a group guys turned up and they were the SODS. ( I think that's Society of Distinguished Songwriters ) ie some of the biggest song writers in the country. All pals of Mike who had been at a function in town. Don Black, who said he had been following my career and loved Jolson. Barry Mason (Delilah) and the highlight for me David Arnold. He is one the most prolific song writers and producers of our time. He, as a 12 year old came to see me with his parents, in Caesars Palace in Luton and I let him play my guitar in my dressing room. He had always remembered that it was me that got him into music. How cool is that. I haven't seen him for over 30 years. It was very special to chat to him and talk about my son David to him.
We are off to a forest in Kent today to see David support Status Quo playing drums in Luke White's band.

The big question is, will I remember my act. I haven't worked it for about 9 months. I suppose as I have been doing it for about 30 years it might come back to me.

Ok bye for now.

Allan

they think its all over

Well, what can I say. Finished on a fantastic high. The Glasgow week was unbelievable. Every night was like a football crowd at the end. A lovely man I called " the Saltcoats Jolson" came three nights in a row and got up and sang at the end . It was also great that so many people I haven't seen for years came back to say hello. Two of the members of my first backing group, The Set, came round to say hello. We recorded the show on the Wednesday. Unfortunately it was only for my personal use as copyright stops me from using it for anything else. I also recorded a documentary for Alba TV. I went back to my old primary school. It hadn't changed one bit. I also went to my old house where I was brought up. That was really weird. Cathy McDonald, the presenter, is a lovely lady. Its a Gaelic show but obviously the interview was in English. Mchlish chala sha machich na hoolash. I just made that up.
So back home and trying to de Jolson ise myself. Last word on it for the moment. It was the best team of people I could possibly have worked with. Michael ...... we have to do it again.

Now my rant.

Thank goodness someone has had the guts to stand up and say what they think of Susan Boyle. Its the emperors new clothes. Since her first appearance I have been wondering what is the British public was thinking of. Yes it was fun to see a dowdy little middle aged woman sing pleasantly. But that was about it. Would you go to a concert and listen to her sing for an hour. I don't think so. Anyway she showed her true colours the other night, and Lilly Allen had the guts to point out just how average she is. I don't grudge her some success but please lets keep it in prospective.

Ok I have a couple of weeks off now for the first time in 7 months. Lovely.

bye

the latest

Hi, once again not a lot to tell. Arrived in Norwich this week. Beautiful boutique B and B. Called 3 Princes. Probably the best on the tour. Its a lady called Carol who owns it and its just great. I rang the door bell and she opened the door in a her night dress. Funny place to have a door. She said did I have a good memory for faces. I said yes she said good there's no mirror in the bathroom. I had salad for dinner the first night, salad for dinner the next night and salad for dinner the third night. Then she asked if I wanted her to read my tea leafs. I said yes. She said I tall dark handsome man was coming .....i said I hope its the butcher.....tar ah!!!!
Its the old land lady routine. Thought it might amuse. Sad bastard.

Poor Louisa our wonderful understudy has had to cancel because of illness. We will miss her. We travelled a lot together and she was lovely. Get well soon. Catherine Rooney (my favourite best friends girlfriend) is taking over. She is lovely as well. You may remember her. I mentioned in a old blog that she was a 'young' Jane.. I mean that in a caring way.

We hit Scotland next week. Dundee. I'm staying with my good friend Fiona in Aberdeen (daughter of the famous Calum Kennedy) and then we finish....can you believe it finish already, in Glasgow. Really looking forward to that.

Ok got two shows today.

bye

Latest news

Well actually not too much news. Once you are on the road life becomes pretty much getting up going to the theatre and doing the shows. They are great though. Guildford was lovely because I stayed with friends and a lot of people came from London to see the show. We got the best review ever from the Surrey Advertiser....not exactly the Times...but. The lovely lady actually said "Watching the show makes you wish you had seen Al Jolson live....but then he couldn't have been as good as Allan Stewart. Not that I have memorised it or anything. Actually up to now every single review has been amazing. Well except for Dibdens. I think I'll send him all the lovely stuff and point out that maybe he is right and everyone else is wrong.
We are in Plymouth at the moment and its a really lovely place, especially as the weather has been great. Up to Newcastle next week. Looking forward to it as its a great theatre and packed from what I hear. Only getting home for one day though, really need two days to recover. I cant believe we are half way through the tour. It seems like yesterday that I was thinking I cant learn all this stuff.....

Ok off to do the matinee.

x

Jolson Dates

Here are the dates for Jolson again,
March 23rd Malvern

March 30th Guildford

April 7th Plymouth

April 14th Newcastle

April 20th Llandudno

April 28th Norwich

May 4th Dundee

May 11th Aberdeen

May 18th Glasgow.

Everything is going great.

Allan

2nd week

Well, as I suspected our opening night audience in Bromley was a lot quieter than my great week in Edinburgh. I had to adjust to the idea that they were coming to see a musical about Jolson and not Allan Stewart in a musical about Jolson (if you know what I mean) Anyway as the week progressed it really came together and I felt I turned a major corner by Thursday. I cant thank Donna and Chris enough for their patience. They were so solid every time I veered off the script. They just carried on and pulled me back in again. Thanks, you are great. Ed Curtis (director) was over the moon on Thursday and other than the fact that his car was locked in a car park and we were stranded in Bromley, he's still a great guy. Once or twice in life the stars all align and everything comes together. That's what we have at the moment. Ok off to Stoke next week ......what can I say.

bye

Wow!!!

Well, what an opening. As far as I was concerned my performance had been a bit up and down up till the official opening night (Tuesday), but it all came together on the opening night....good idea for a song. The audience were amazing and Donna and Chris were sensational. Donna has managed to get a round of applause on every exit...no mean feat. Everyone was over the moon and we had drinks at Hendrix after meeting the cooooncilors and the Mayor. It turns out that Sir Tom Farmer is a Jolson fan and he wants to come back and sit at the front so he can sing along with me.
We are also knocked out with the Reviews. The Scotsman, 4 stars, The Daily Record 4 stars, The Herald 4 stars and they all raved. As expected Dibden of the Evening News liked the show but as he always does, had a pop at me. But you know the old saying "sticks and stones may break by bones but Dibden cant hurt....my box office" I think thats what it is. We've broken box office records so what can I say.

So its off to Bromley next week and I'm sure a more sedate audience. I wonder if we'll get them on their feet every night.

PS, thanks for all your lovely emails sent via my web site.

Bye

Jolson and Company "Open"

Well what can I say. It has been the best 4 weeks of my career. I have loved every minute of the whole process. Ed Curtis, (the director) Donna Steele (costar) Chris Howell (costar) have been a dream to work with. Michael Harrison (the producer) has surrounded me with the best technicians possible. Lighting, sound, musicians, designers are all the best I have worked with. I cant believe we didn't have one angry word in 4 weeks. Just laughs. We are all on the same wave length as far as humour goes. Captain Cherub (Ed) had the line of the week. My memory for lines is not the best in the world (that's an understatement) anyway at the tech rehearsal I suggested taking my jacket off in a particular scene. Ed said "yes but don't you have enough to forget" clever. Also on the same subject. Chris asked if a line had been cut because he forgot it. Ed said no. Donna said if that was the case the show would be called .....AND COMPANY. I think I've managed to hold my own though.
So we open officially on Tuesday. So lets see what the critics say. I'm not holding my breath though you can never know what makes a critic happy. The audiences have been amazing the first three shows. Standing up and screaming. What more can you ask for. Also business up here in Edinburgh is incredible.

So, oh....must mention Holly, our DSM, I didn't mention her in my last blog and she was upset. Holly Holly Holly.

Jane flew up for the first three shows and loved them. She didn't know what to expect and was totally knocked out. So we are off and running. I have a lot to do to get my performance to where I want it to be, but I'm at a great starting point.

Ok I'll let you know how the tour goes.

the latest

Hi, well two weeks into rehearsal for Jolson and Co and it has been the best time you can have with your clothes on. How can hard work be so much fun. We all met on the first morning, which was the first bad snow day so everyone was late, and the day was the usual polite first day of politeness. (good grammar). On the second day I commented on our director's (Ed Curtis who incidentaly is fantastic) young demeanor and asked if he had to show his ID to buy alcohol and he said he did. Donna Steele (my lovely costar) said she did as well and I retorted 'fuck off' She was laughing but she wasn't happy. So the gloves were off. Later that day as we prepared for our first on stage kiss I asked her if she was ready for it. "Well yes but I've never kissed any one as old as you before" Agh...... back of the net! Usually it takes a couple of days for those type of cutting lines to come out. I love it!!! We all have an incredible amount to learn but unbelievably by the end of the first week we did a sort of run without the script. I was amazed. I needed a lot of prompting but it was still pretty good. My other costar is Chris Howell who is amazing as well. Donna has a beautiful understudy called Louisa Maxwell who has the unenviable job of sitting learning the part as we go along but not actually rehearsing it....very difficult. Steve Arnott (who is also the stage manager) has to understudy me and Chris, even harder. We have a very tight little group already and as I like to make rehearsals fun we have a many laughs.
One more week in London and then up to Edinburgh for the tech week and our premiere at the Kings. Cant wait. Had a lot of interviews this week and I'm doing the STV 5.30 show on Monday 23rd. OK, next time I write I will no doubt be up and running and will either be deflated or ecstatic..... I'm sure it will be the latter.

PS Jane and I had dinner with my producer Michael Harrison and my favourite 'friends girlfriend' Catherine.I promised I'd mention her in my blog. She is lovely. She is a young Jane..... Jane if you read this... I mean it in a caring way. ( use Edna Everage's voice for the last line)

bye

How are you.

Hi, sorry haven't written for such a long time. The panto seemed to go by so quickly. Its was definitely our most successful. It certainly was financially and going by the reaction I had via my web site and the letters we received, every one loved it. Which will make it even harder next year. In fact every year it gets harder. Ooh Mrs!!
So I've been home for a couple of weeks and I start Jolson rehearsals on Monday. Really looking forward to it. I'm really pleased with the advance bookings we have for the tour already, especially in Edinburgh, Newcastle and Plymouth. The rest are good but those places are going like a bomb. We have Donna Steele and Chris Howell as my costars. I don't know them but I have heard great reports about them. We have a great 8 piece band and I've seen models of the set. Its quite complicated with a moving floor. To tell you the truth I don't know how it works but I'm assured it will be great. Its lovely being home and just slobbing for a couple of weeks. Ok that's about as exciting as it gets. I'll let you know how it all goes.

bye

mobile phones

Caught at the wheel while on the phone. So I broke the law. £60 and 3 points on my licence. The Evening News did a story and I held my hands up and said I shouldn't have done it. I would have thought that would be the end of it. However some morons actually wrote on the papers web site calling for "this criminal to be banned" and other personal comments absolutely nothing to do with the situation.
So, to the vicious, jealous, losers, sitting in their pitiful little homes with their boring little jobs and sad little lives, I would like to wish them seasons greetings.
On the other hand I would like to thank the thousands of people coming to the Kings every day and night and laughing and cheering all the way through the panto. We are well on our way to break all box office records and I'm very proud of this show this year.
Merry Christmas
Allan

Aladdin

Well we are open and I am very pleased this year. We have definitely moved back to a great traditional panto, with a very up to the minute 3D Genie. The kids (and grown ups) go wild when the spider flies out and is right in front of their face. I also feel that the comedy is stronger this year. (I'm biased) As you know we took a chance last year and did a very different type of show. Not every body liked the change, so we make a conscious decision to get back to basics. We've had a great feed back already. So its head down and get through 12 shows a week. I'll wait a couple of weeks then start thinking about Jolson & Co.
Have a great Christmas.
Allan

JOLSON DATES

Hi, here are the almost final dates for the Jolson& Co tour.

Feb 23 Kings Edinburgh
March 02 Kings Edinburgh
March 09 Bromley
March 16 Stoke
March 23 Malvern
March 30 Guilford
April 06 Plymouth
April 13 Newcastle
April 20 Llandudno
April 27 Norwich
May 04 Dundee Rep
May 11 Aberdeen HM
May 18 Kings Glasgow

Great tour really looking forward to it.

Hello

Hi,
Not a lot to say at the moment. I've got 2 more cruise contract to go and then its into panto, which is looking really good at the moment. We've had a couple of Jolson meetings and a great new young director is on board. Ed Curtis. He has done some exciting work in the past and loves the script. I'm getting excited about it myself. We open in Edinburgh on the 27th of February and run till the 7th of March. We then go to Bromley. I will post all the dates when the whole tour is confirmed. Its great that Edinburgh Kings (John Stalker) is premiering this musical. In fact its the first time they have produced a musical. Ok as I said nothing much happening so that's it.
bye

Back home

Just back from LA on holiday. Wonderful is all I can say. We had two weeks staying in the Hollywood hills with my mate Ross King and then a week in Laguna Beach. The weather was perfect and Ross's hospitality was magnificent. The kids loved it and Jane had a well earned rest. David did a small gig in a club called Room 5. It was a singer songwriter club and he did 3 numbers at the piano. It went really well. Kate spent a fortune on clothes.....actually we all did.
On a sad note I learnt that Hazel Horner (she had been coming to my shoes for about 35 years) died of cancer. I saw her and her friend Joan at Christmas in Edinburgh and Hazel bought the tickets for next year as soon as they came on sale. Unfortunately the cancer spread very quickly and she died at the beginning of August. The Panto wont be the same without her.
The Jolson tour is coming along nicely and I will post the tour dates on my blog. Another panto meeting tomorrow to discuss costumes and script, and off to the Arcadia on Wednesday.
Bye

Jolson

Hi, well I'm really pleased to announce that I have signed to do a UK tour of a new Jolson musical next year. Michael Harrison, the producer, has found a great script in America and when I read it I loved it. We are going to premier it in the Kings in Edinburgh, tour England and then close in Glasgow. I am particularly excited because I have always wanted to play Jolson again after the success of the last one in 1996. Its a much smaller production than the original but it is very cleverly written with a lot of humour in it.
The Panto is coming along really well and Paul Elliott and I have had a few meetings in the last few days. I'm off to Naples to pick up the Aurora.
OK that's about it for now.
Bye

Trouble

Well my humour got me into trouble this week. I was on the Aurora and towards the end of my act TWO very large people (I'm being kind) sitting in the front row, got up and walked out. (to be fare they probably thought I was finished.) Well I defy any comedian not to take advantage of the situation. So I chased after them. Come back I shouted, I get better. They didn't hear me so I stopped them. They looked very embarrassed. I said where are you going. Surely not for more food.....I know its been 45 minutes but you must be able to hold on. Well they didn't come back they just carried on. So I said Ok if there is anybody standing at the back there is room for 4 down here. The audience roared. I laughed as well and it was me who said it. Anyway the next day the Cruise director said they put in an official complaint. I did feel bad for a little while but when your thinking on your feet and someone walks out on you, a man has to do what a man has to do. We sent them some pies and they were alright. I hope they will eventually see the funny side. Someone said I was fattist....I said I think you'll find they were fattist....(Jimmy Carr 2205 Royal Variety show)
I've been told you like to read about my funny exploits in my blog. So I'll keep you up to date.
bye.

What a cheek.

I received a cutting from a Scottish newspaper from a friend. I think it was the Sun. They were talking about how female binge drinkers were being compared to men "If you drink like a man you may finish up looking like a man" (or something like that) Then they said, so dont drink to much ladies or might end up looking like Allan Stewart, and they had a picture of me as Dame last year.......what a fucking liberty.
I hope my updated web site will be up and running soon. Not to much change but I have a few new photos, a review section, and a video on there. I also hope to add videos as I go along.
Jane and I went to the Isle of Wight to see David and his band. He opened the Big Top stage on the Saturday. It was a massive gig for a young boy who has only worked live in 4 small venues. I know I'm biased but he really rose to the occasion.
Paul Elliott and I went up to Edinburgh to launch Aladdin (with the 3D genie) its going to be great this year. We also auditioned for a princess and we found a beautiful girl who was Miss Scotland and Miss UK. (Nieve Jennings) Not only does she look great she is a lovely actress and singer. So we are all set. Mr. Stott was on great form when we did the Q and A with the audience at the launch. I flew out join a ship in Malta and arrived at the Hotel Casstille at about half two in the morning. I was a little worried as I walked into reception as it looked a bit tired and Sydney Greenstreet from the film Cassablanca was behind the desk. But it was in the middle of the night and hey, I was only going to sleep a few hours and then go to the ship.
As I opened the door of the room the smell hit me. Dead body?...... animal?......or just piss. There was a little single bed with an old quilt on it. A dilapidated dressing table and a standard lamp with a squinty lamp shade on it cowered in the corner. The swirley carpet had stains and was well worn. I looked in the toilet. An old gag came to mind. "Do you have a good memory for faces, asked the landlady. "Why" I said. "Cause there's no mirror in the bathroom". I decided not to take my clothes off and I pulled back the quilt and lay on top of the bed. The only thing it didn't have was the red flashing light shining in through the window which is in all the old movies. As I lay there I thought of the conversation I had with my old mate Ross King, a few hours before. He was in Las Vagas sitting on the balcony of the Ritz Carlton over looking the lake. He was drinking champagne with his new 23 year old girlfriend, and I thought...where did it all go wrong.
I woke up every hour on the hour to the sound of the church clock which was situated in my wardrobe.
When I eventually went up stairs to the breakfast room to eat my slice of toast and coffee from a flask I rehearsed what I was going to say to the Port Agent for putting me in place like this. I was going to tell him a thing or two. When he arrived he couldn't speak a word of English so that was the end of that. My mobile had no charge and I had forgotten my charger, so I had to go into a phone box for the first time in 20 years to phone my wife. I related my story and she laughed. ..... "What a fucking liberty"
I joined the ship (incidentally it was a company I hadn't worked for before) and everything was fine from there on in.
So all you avid blog readers, as you see ,show business isn't always glamorous.
Bye

You Tube

Just a quickie before I fly off to Barbados. Well panto finished and we had a great time as usual. The general opinion was that everyone loved it but said it was different. Well it was and that was what Paul and I set out to do. Andy wasn't there so it had to change. Grant and I had our usual wind ups going and he is just a great person to work with. He also really came into his own this year as well. His partnering with Jo Freer really worked well. Paul and I have started talking about next year already. I went to Birmingham to see the production of Aladdin we are getting next year and its fantastic. The 3D sections had the kids almost hysterical ( and the grown ups) The sets are all new and have a great modern look. We will be back to a traditional panto with a few surprises.
So back to work. I'm off to Singapore on Monday. My agent phoned up and asked if I wanted to be in the Queen Vic....... I thought me in Eastenders......but it was the new Queen Victoria (the latest Cunard super liner) so I fly to Hong Kong to pick that up in March. I was offered the new John Byrne play about the Slab Boys (the fourth in the series) at the Lyceum in Edinburgh but as usual I was committed to other work and couldn't do it. Every time something different comes up I'm working. The family are all well and David, with his band ,have been booked for the Isle of Wight festival in June. He also has a big publisher interested in his music. So all is well there.
Ok I wont leave it so long till the next time
bye

We're off and running

Well I should have written this sooner but when you do 2 shows a day and then have two whiskey and cokes you don't feel like doing anything else.
The show is great. We have had good ish reviews. The Edinburgh Evening News was 5 stars....not like Mr Dibden to be nice, but he was. Most of the other papers have gone from 3 to 4 stars and basically said they felt the story was a bit weak. Well the problem is that with almost every other panto you know the story before you go in. With this one you only know that the bears don't like anyone sitting in their chairs. The rest is made up. So you have to work a little bit. I am very happy with the comedy and the cast , the lights the set and the music is great. Everyone I have talked to says the same thing. It's great....its very different. That's very fair. We set out to make it different. I am enjoying it just as much this year, and believe it or not I have started writing stuff for next year. At least when you come in next year you will know that Aladdin gets the lamp and the girl.....what more could you ask for. I'm in London at the moment as I have come down to see David's first gig with his new band. They are playing at China Whites. A very trendy club in the centre of London. I'm more nervous than he is. So he is doing about 6 of his own songs with a band he has put together from LCCM ( his college) By the way. I don't think I have mentioned that I'm selling my 1965 Gibson 330TD. It's original except for the machine heads and its in great nick. David didn't want it and it never gets used so £2000 will secure. Any enthusiasts contact me through the website.
OK its back to Ed tomorrow and into 11 more shows.
allan

Panto time again

Well into second week of rehearsals for Goldilocks. Just as good as ever. Grant and I met for our first day coffee and then up to the Methodist church to meet the rest of the cast. We have new comers to the Kings, Tweedie and James Macenzie. Two really nice guys. Tweedie has had most of his career in the Circus, which is perfect for this panto this year. We have Jo Freer and Claire Dargo from previous years and of course Paul Elliott, our wonderful producer and writer and director. First day's are always slow and laborious but we had started to put it all together by Wednesday. Although I was panicking about not knowing my lines I went through to Glasgow to the Take That concert. Jane was doing the hospitality. It was sensational. I'm not a massive fan but you had to marvel at the production and professionalism. Saturday, I flew down to London to see Kate in her first leading roll in her Arts Ed musical.....I am a doting father but she was wonderful. She has a real career in musicals in her future. We did a full run of the show before I left to fly down. It's amazing that we get to this stage after only 5 days. Anyway we start the tech tomorrow and I cant believe the set for this show. Paul has transformed the stage into an incredible big top circus. So everything is looking good. This time next week we'll know if it all works. I feel good about it so time will tell. Ok speak soon.

So soon

Hi, just had to write again. I'm absolutely loving the part of Roger di Bris in the producers. Opened on Tuesday and couldn't believe I got it all right. It was amazing. The entrance in the frock was great. but the magic moment is appearing on the stage dressed as Hitler and performing the show stopping song spring time for Hitler. The song builds and builds. You think its finished and it just gets bigger. Then the goosestepping puppets come on and it still gets bigger. Any way add to that a Saturday night Glasgow audience and you have it as good as it gets. In the fianle as we stood in a line with the audience standing and screaming Corrie English (Max) shouted "I love this city". The family all came up to see Saturday's show and Kate and David loved it. David doesn't like musicals but he said its the first one has enjoyed one because everything was in time. I know what he means. Every move fits perfectly with the music. Kate loved it as well. She is getting excited about her debut in her school musical. She is playing the lead in a musical about a circus.....how weird, so am I (Goldilocks) Anyway only one more week to go and into rehearsals for the panto. I'm looking forward to that as well. Well just wanted to let you know how lucky I am to enjoy my work so much.
bye

The Producers

I waited till I opened in the Producers before I wrote my latest blog. Well I only had about a week to rehearse and I did have a few worrying moments but thanks to a wonderful director and an incredible cast it all came together last night. It was a wonderful opening night. I wasn't sure if a Glasgow audience would get the American Jewish humour, but they were with it from the first gag. The part although not that big (I've heard that before) was very intricate and Petra (my director) was meticulous. She showed me all the dance steps (I'm not the greatest dancer in the world) and I was amazed that it all came together on the opening night. Corrie English who plays Max is wonderful and Joe Pasqualli who I have worked with many times is brilliant in the part of Leo. He is so likable on and off stage. My first entrance is in a £20,000 dress and is probably the best entrance ever. I love the Springtime for Hitler song dressed as Hitler. I took that part over from Russ Abbot who was very helpful as well. I am very lucky that over the years most of the parts I have wanted to play have come my way. So now its down to two weeks of shows and then straight into Panto rehearsals. So once again thanks to a wonderful director Petra. I couldn't have done it without her.
bye
